Festival of Science - 2023: International scientific webinar "Fear and Despotism in European Political Literature"

On 12 May 2023, within the framework of the Festival of Science - 2023, the Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University hosted an international scientific webinar "Fear and Despotism in European Political Literature". The event was moderated by Rusudan Makhachashvili, Head of the Department of Germanic Philology, Faculty of Romance and Germanic Philology at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, Doctor of Science in Philology, Professor (Ukraine).

 

The speaker at the event was Carlo Illuminati, Professor of Italian Studies at the School of Languages, Literature, Linguistics and Culture, University of Calgary, PhD in Philology (Canada).

The webinar covered the following issues:

- stylistics of fear in Montesquieu's texts;

- metaphors of power in “The Prince” by Niccolò Machiavelli;

- the European political tradition and democratic values as a backdrop for russia's war against Ukraine.

The guest of honour at the international event was Edoardo Crisafulli, Director of Dante Alighieri Institute of Italian Culture at the Embassy of Italy.

The event was concluded with a scientific discussion attended by students, undergraduates, graduates, postgraduates, doctoral students, young and experienced scholars of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, representatives of academic communities in Italy (Rome, Verona, Palermo), Canada (Calgary), Germany (Berlin), Austria (Vienna).
