IVth International Video Conference “Ukrainian and American Historiography”

On October 8, 2013 the fourth International Video Conference "Ukrainian and American Historiography" was held between students of the Institute of Society of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, and students from Seton Hall University (New Jersey, the USA) majored in history.

The video Conference was dedicated to the issues of Ukrainian and American historiography. Ukrainian students presented the information about Ukrainian historians and researchers who studied Cossack's era in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Our students prepared the presentations about the scientific heritage of Mykola Kostomarov and Dmytro Javornutskui. They also underlined the importance of Cossack's period for Independent Ukraine. Ukrainian and American students had a great chance to ask their questions on Cossack's period to Vitaliy Scherback, Doctor of Sciences in History, Professor of the Institute of Society of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University. Vitaliy Scherback is the author of more than 300 scientific works on Cossack's history.

American students made a presentation on the first contact of Native Americans with the Europeans and the first steps in the colonization of the New World. It was stressed that this period was very painful for all of them and understanding of its value for the next generations was discussed in the frame of the American historiography.

Both Universities has been cooperating for more than six year in the framework of the joint project "Building Understanding across Time and Borders".
