Computer-mediated Communication (CMC) Workshops

1. Using blogs for student reading and writing: October 14

In this workshop teachers learn how to use blogs to create more opportunities for students to write outside of class. The teachers then create their own blogs, subscribe to other teacher blogs, and discuss how they could apply this technology to their own teaching practice.

2. Using wikis for collaborative writing projects: October 21

In this workshop teachers learn how to use wikis to promote student collaborative writing and peer editing. A wiki is a free online space that anybody can add content to or edit. Teachers will do several activities using an existing wiki, then create their own wikis and discuss how they could use this tool in their own classrooms.

3. Podcasts: Creating ‘Mobile Classrooms’: November 4

This workshop introduces teachers to using podcasts for a variety of English language learning uses inside and outside the classroom. A podcast is an audio file stored on the Internet that teachers and students can download for free and listen to on their mp3s or computers. Teachers first learn how to search for podcasts, and then how to subscribe to podcasts using iTunes. They will also explore ways to help students develop ‘mobile classrooms’ from freely available online podcasts. We’ll also create our own podcast.

4. VoiceThread and Second Life for speaking activities: November 11

This workshop introduces teachers to VoiceThread and Second Life. VoiceThread is an application to post spoken, written or video responses to content teachers or students post or create. It is useful to continue classroom conversations outside of the classroom.

Second Life is a virtual environment for social networking, and a great place for learners to practice using English. Teachers will create avatars and begin to explore the world.

5. Teacher Presentations and Awarding of Certificates: December 2
