On April 27, 2023, at the meeting of Academic Council at Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University, a report on the implementation of the scientific theme of the Department of Physical Therapy and Ergotherapy, Faculty of Health, Physical Education and Sports "Criteria for assessing the functional state and effectiveness of physical therapy for people with diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems (based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health)" (registration number 0118U001228; term of implementation: 2018 - 2023) was approved.
The results of the research were presented by the scientific supervisor, Head of the Department of Physical Therapy and Ergotherapy, Doctor of Science in Medicine, Professor Valentyn Savchenko.
In the course of the research, the team of scientific and pedagogical staff of the department (V.M. Savchenko, G.D. Kharchenko, I.D. Omeri, V.V. Kerestei, O.V. Tymchyk, E.O. Nevedomska, O.Y. Buriak, Y.M. Pohrebniak, S.P. Yatsenko) and students of the first (bachelor's) and second (master's) levels of higher education of the educational and professional programs "Physical Therapy, Ergotherapy" and "Physical Therapy" have developed a unified system for assessing the health status of persons in need of rehabilitation care. This system is based on the use of the main rehabilitation set of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF), which is widely used in the practice of rehabilitation specialists. The system for assessing the categories of the ICF rehabilitation set consists of:
- description of the procedure for making a decision on the level of impairment of functions, activity and participation, the impact of environmental factors on human health in a particular domain/category of ICF;
- a list of assessment tools (tests, scales, questionnaires) of the ICF domains/categories;
- Ukrainian-language description of the assessment tools (tests, scales, questionnaires) of the ICF domains/categories.
The developed unified system for assessing the health status of rehabilitants involves the use of 163 categories of the ICF rehabilitation set. To describe 111 categories (68%), 49 tests, scales, and questionnaires have been selected, and to characterize 52 categories (32%), the authors have developed their own evaluation scales. 32 tests, scales, and questionnaires have been translated.
The research results have been tested at international and national scientific and practical conferences; 20 scientific articles and a chapter in a collective monograph have been published. The scientists of Grinchenko University have prepared for publication a textbook "Rehabilitation Set of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health in the Practice of Rehabilitation Specialists", which received positive feedback and was recommended for use in rehabilitation practice by professional public associations of Ukraine - the Ukrainian Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine and the Ukrainian Association of Physical Medicine, Rehabilitation and Balneology.
The results of the research (a unified system for assessing domains/categories of the ICF rehabilitation set, which contains a list and description of diagnostic tools in Ukrainian, a procedure for making a decision on the level of impairment of functions, activity and participation, the impact of environmental factors on human health) have been implemented in the practice of public and private rehabilitation institutions in Kyiv – a municipal non-profit enterprise “Kyiv City Clinical Hospital for War Veterans”, the Ukrainian Medical Centre for Rehabilitation of Children with Organic Nervous System Disorders of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine; Medical Centre of the subsidiary “Medical Scientific and Practical Association “Medbud” of the public joint-stock company “Holding Company “Kyivmiskbud”, Physical Therapy Centre “Tsander”, and State Institution “Scientific and Practical Medical Centre “Rehabilitation” of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” in Uzhhorod.
The results obtained in the course of the research have been implemented in the educational process of higher education institutions, in particular, Borys Grinchenko Kyiv University (the discipline "International Classification of Functioning in Physical Therapy, Ergotherapy" has been developed, the disciplines of the rehabilitation direction "Physical Therapy for Diseases of Internal Organs and Surgical Diseases", "Fundamentals of Ergotherapy", "Physical Therapy for Disorders of the Musculoskeletal System and Physical Therapy for Diseases and Injuries of the Nervous System” have been updated), Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", Educational and Research Institute of Health Care of the National University of Water and Environmental Engineering, Educational and Research Medical Institute of Sumy State University.
