University of Palermo (Università degli Studi di Palermo)

From April 29 to May 03, 2024, within the framework of the Erasmus+ staff mobility for teaching program, the lecturers of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University - Rusudan Makhachashvili, Head of the Department of Germanic Philology, Doctor of Science in Philology, Professor; Liudmyla Anisimova, Academic Secretary of the University, Associate Professor of the Department of World Literature, PhD in Philology, Associate Professor; Mariia Boiko, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Ukrainian Language, Doctor of Philosophy in Philology, were on academic mobility to the University of Palermo (Università degli Studi di Palermo).

The team of philologists presented at the Faculty of Philology and Philosophy the scientific and journalistic publication "Ban Ruscism", a significant project of Grinchenko University. They also discussed the challenges of teaching philological disciplines, in particular at the Department of Slavic Studies, and the change in priorities of Italian students in choosing to study Slavic languages. After the enemy's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the number of students choosing to study Russian has significantly decreased, as opposed to Ukrainian, which is growing in popularity every year.

During the week, the colleagues attended Professor Marianne Zumo's English classes, including professional presentations by students on discourse analysis of contemporary popular media.

A series of lectures and workshops were held for students of the University of Palermo studying English (Liudmyla Anisimova in Literary Studies, Rusudan Makhachashvili in Digital Linguistics) and Slavic Studies (Maria Boyko in Ukrainian). The students actively participated in the classes and had the opportunity to talk to the teachers on various topics and, above all, to hear the truth about the war in Ukraine. By the way, the webinar on contemporary Ukrainian cinema was also attended by teachers from schools that teach Ukrainian in Sicily.

It was a pleasant surprise to meet with colleagues and students of Ukrainian higher education institutions who were also on academic mobility to the University of Palermo. On the occasion, working meetings were held and prospects for further cooperation between Borys Grinchenko university, Ukrainian Catholic University and Petro Mohyla Black Sea National University were discussed.

We are grateful to the University of Palermo for the hospitality, the opportunity to exchange experience and improve the professional skills of lecturers of Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University!
