Ukrainian Teachers and Students of Japanese Arrive in Japan under Japan Foundation Program

1 1

Faculty members and students from Borys Grinchenko Kyiv Metropolitan University joined the Ukrainian delegation participating in the international Japan Foundation program in Japan, which began this August. The university is represented by Lidiia Anistratenko and Kseniia Medvedieva, lecturers at the Department of Japanese Language and Translation, alongside students Daryna Basova and Kateryna Boiko. The educational and research internship has brought together 24 participants from leading higher education institutions across Kyiv, Lviv, Dnipro, and other Ukrainian cities.

As part of the program, a reception was held in Tokyo on 17August, attended by representatives of the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan and Japanese partners of the initiative. The meeting served as a valuable platform for professional networking, knowledge sharing, and strengthening Ukrainian-Japanese academic ties. The itinerary includes comprehensive professional training, enabling participants to explore Japanese language teaching methodologies in Japan, exchange insights with Japanese colleagues, visit leading educational institutions, and engage in cultural and academic events. Ahead lie meetings and collaboration with the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies and Ryukoku University, participation in a symposium on the Japanese language, and an educational trip to Hiroshima.

This program holds significant relevance for Ukraine. At a time when war poses unprecedented challenges to the education system, Ukrainian universities remain resilient – continuing to teach, conduct research, expand  international partnerships, and prepare a new generation of specialists. Japanese studies in Ukraine extend beyond language acquisition; they foster a space for scientific dialogue, cultural understanding, academic mobility, and stronger ties between Ukraine and Japan.

For students and faculty of the Faculty of Oriental Languages at Grinchenko University, such opportunities are of exceptional value. They allow participants to deepen their professional competencies, communicate directly with Japanese peers and scholars, adopt best academic practices, unlock new horizons for academic mobility, and actively contribute to the international community of Japanologists.

We express our sincere gratitude to the Japan Foundation, the Embassy of Ukraine in Japan, and all participating Japanese universities and partners for supporting Ukrainian education, advancing academic cooperation, and providing Ukrainian educators and students with the opportunity to learn, grow professionally, and represent Ukraine on the global stage.
