Objectives of the framework project «HORIZON EUROPE ELEXAI – European Lexicographic Infrastructure for Artificial Intelligence»:

Objective 1 – Expand ELEXIS services through AI-enhanced language models. Upgrade the ELEXIS infrastructure by integrating LLMs enriched with high-quality semantic resources. These models will be optimised for lexicographic tasks (monolingual and cross-lingual) and made available as services for a wide spectrum of user communities, from academic researchers to SMEs, enabling Europe to maintain leadership in multilingual and digital innovation.

Objective 2 – Provide lexicographically informed knowledge representations. Develop knowledge bases and knowledge graphs grounded in lexicographic principles and deploy them as interoperable services within the ELEXAI infrastructure. These resources will support cutting-edge applications in Natural Language Understanding (NLU) and AI, thereby broadening the scope of the research infrastructure (RI) to serve both the language sciences and data-driven sectors.

Objective 3 – Deliver European benchmarks and evaluation datasets. Produce and openly disseminate standardised evaluation datasets and benchmarks for lexicography, LLMs, and NLU/NLG. These benchmarks will strengthen Europe’s digital sovereignty by reducing the dependence on external (translated English) datasets, while providing a trusted basis for interoperability, reproducibility, and long-term impact across research and industry.

Objective 4 – Build an agentic AI-powered ELEXAI platform. Implement a next-generation, agentic AI-based infrastructure that supports the extraction, structuring, and linking of lexicographic resources at scale. This platform will extend the ELEXIS mission by offering new tools and services to multiple user communities (research, industry, cultural heritage, policy), and by providing remote and virtual access in line with the FAIR and Open Science principles.

Objective 5 – Ensure access, standards, and interoperability. Consolidate ELEXAI as a European hub for lexicographic standards, methods, and resources. The infrastructure will harmonise data formats, APIs, and interoperability frameworks across languages and domains, ensuring integration with related European RIs (e.g., CLARIN, DARIAH) and enhancing Europe’s capacity to address societal and policy challenges in multilingualism and digital communication.

Objective 6 – Promote Open Science and responsible innovation in lexicography. Foster an open-access culture across the lexicography and AI communities by ensuring that all datasets, tools, and services follow the FAIR principles. Training and guidance will be provided to researchers and user communities on responsible data sharing, IPR, and ethical standards, thereby embedding Open Science and inclusivity into the RI’s DNA..

Objective 7 – Secure long-term sustainability and growth of ELEXAI. Consolidate the governance, funding, and membership base of ELEXIS/ELEXAI to ensure continuity beyond project funding. This includes developing a revised business plan, expanding membership among European countries, reinforcing international cooperation, and strengthening links with industry. By addressing sustainability explicitly, ELEXAI will secure its position as a long-term pillar of the European Research Infrastructure landscape.
